2017 Subaru Legacy

The Subaru Legacy sets itself apart by being the token mid-sized car that comes standard in AWD. Few other cars offer AWD, and it’s a pricey upgrade when they do. Even with all-wheel drive, which usually has a negative effect on fuel economy, the Legacy also is fuel efficient. EPA estimates range from 23 mpg combined (20 city/28 highway) with the six-cylinder engine to 29 mpg combined (25 city/34 highway) with the four.

The 2017 Legacy is available with two engines; a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 175 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque and a 3.6-liter six-cylinder engine good for 256 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque. This year will be Subarus 50th anniversary of offering its signature horizontally opposed, "boxer" engines in its cars.

The Legacy really shines in regard to safety. Stability and traction control, antilock disc brakes, a rearview camera, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and seat cushion airbags all come standard this year. The Legacy aced every federal and IIHS test, and is one of the few cars on the road to do so. Subaru is also one of the first—if not only—automakers to test pet safety devices. Like many Americans, Subaru owners tend to own pets, so the extra effort for them was a wise decision.

The new Subaru Legacy hasn’t undergone any drastic styling changes, but the fact remains that the Legacy can do things for you that no other midsized car can. It’s safer than vehicles twice its price, is fuel efficient, and is extremely capable. If you’re going to be shopping for a midsized car this year, the Legacy is a must try for you.
