Gas Saving Tips
As the summer travel season starts, prices at the gas pump are usually going in the wrong direction for our wallets; higher prices at the gas pump are a fact of life today. Some commuters prefer share rides to manage the costs; others take public transportation. But if you are like so many other drivers, you depend on your personal vehicle to get you from Point A to Point B. That’s when drivers become more concerned about how to squeeze the most miles from their fuel dollars and keep their cars running their best. Here are a couple tips to save money at the pump.
- Monitor your tires. Under-inflated tires or poorly aligned wheels waste fuel by forcing the engine to work harder.
- Keep your engine "tuned up." Replace filters and check fluids as recommended in your owner’s manual; have engine performance problems (rough idling, poor acceleration, increased fuel use, etc.) corrected immediately to extend the life of your vehicle. Given today's high-tech engines, it's wise to have this type of work done by automobile technicians who are certified in engine performance.
- Use windows and air conditioning (A/C) wisely. Keep windows up when driving at higher speeds to reduce air drag. This is true even with air conditioning. But turn off the A/C in stop-and-go traffic to save fuel.
- Drive gently. Don't drive aggressively. Sudden acceleration will guzzle gas, causing you stop to fill up more often.
- Avoid unnecessary idling. Shut off the engine while waiting for friends and family.
Always follow the maintenance recommended by the manufacturer. Cars are designed to run a certain way and if they are ignored, they won't be as efficient.
